"If you take a brain out of the skill and you cut a thin slice of it, and you put under even a very powerful microscope, there's nothing there... it won't tell you anything." - Carl Schoonover.
The mind has always been of great interest me. As a Artist I rely on my imagination greatly and this often comes to me through a process of internal dialogue with myself. The process of thoughts and memories which play out in the mind like a private theater are taken for granted and rarely questioned as we go about our everyday lives, making mental lists, replaying scenes from our days and daydream.
These phenomena are manufactured by our brains. The organ which is a great mystery, even medics and scientists do not understand quite how it works. As the Carl Schoonover quote states, one examined and dissected the physical brain will not tell you anything.
After visiting the 'Brains' exhibition at MOSI my motivation to further investigate the brain was sparked. The way in which artists attempted to represent the brain was inspiring and eye opening as works such as Katharine Downson's.
Katharine Downson's command of materials and new technology to create ghost like semi transparent representations of the mind inspiring and have attempted to draw upon this in my own work.
However during the exhibition I was stuck by the fact that it was focused on the physical matter of the brain, not the countless immaterial functions and associations with the mind. Therefore this is leads to my aim....
To explore the mind, attempting to represent the immaterial matter of the mind through a process of sculpture and installation. Through this I will investigate what thoughts could look like and question metaphors which could be related the the mind.
